Fitness Requirements & Preparation

Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route is a real challenge due to altitude, rate of ascent, and varying temperatures. During an average climbing day, you'll walk 6-7 hours. This challenging route is particularly popular among experienced climbers, requiring good fitness and proper preparation for success.

Take Your Time

Don't hike too fast - allow your body time to adapt and acclimatize. "Pole pole" (slowly slowly) is especially important on this challenging northern route.

Physical Preparation

Start training months before your climb. Multi-day hikes are excellent preparation, along with running and aerobic exercise to build the endurance needed for this demanding route.

Add an Extra Day

We highly recommend adding an extra day of trekking! This reduces altitude sickness risk by spreading the climb over more days and giving your body more time to adjust.

Health Monitoring

Our guides check your health twice daily and monitor for altitude sickness symptoms. Professional medical support and evacuation available when needed.

Proper Nutrition

Our cook provides delicious, nutritious meals essential for maintaining energy during the strenuous climb. Proper nutrition is crucial for this challenging route - menu available on request.
